Comment on GOOGLE CALENDAR: Why does it suck me in, only to thwart me? by ben

I just came across your article today. I too love Google's Calendar but with some reservations. Most recently, I love being able to sync with my outlook, which I use for work. Now I can have access to my work and personal calendars at the same place! But I've run into the same problem as you have, I can't change my primary calendar. I want to have separate calendars for work and personal, but when I synced, it piled both of them into the primary (personal) calendar. I had to go and manually delete each entry to separate them.

I did find one workaround, though, which you might find helpful. I copied my personal calendar to a different (not primary) calendar, and now I use the primary one to sync with my Outlook.

If you go to your calendar settings and at the bottom there are links for your calendars, right click and save the ICAL calendar to your computer. You can then create a new calendar, and import that .ics file into it which is a copy of your primary calendar. Then you can delete all the entries in your primary calendar and use it for whichever purposes you wish (in my case, my work calendar).

I hope this helps. If you have questions, feel free to ask. This may not apply to you anymore, but I thought you might enjoy.

Kerri,
I too hope that we'll eventually get to a point where LinkedIn members can create their own profile badges. As I described in my comment over on Steve's blog, the limitation is currently due to the technology we re-purposed to get this nonprofit initiative out the door quickly. As I also mentioned, we're working on improving our existing groups functionality, which may include a more robust, flexible badging product in the future. Allowing individuals to support nonprofit causes they care about, no matter how small, is certainly something to work towards. In order to get things started we will focus on causes and organizations that touch a broader audience (the process is quite manual at this point, so efficiency matters some).

In the meantime I would encourage you and your readers to include causes like your child's daycare center elsewhere in the profile - the websites or interests sections, for example. The entire content of one's profile is searchable by keyword in the search bar at the top of every page. So people can still find this information if they look for it.

Hope that helps,

Dave

Hi David,

Thank you for the response. It's great that Linked In will be adding more charities to its badge program. I guess I like the model where you can generate a badge on the fly, like the other services. I'm toying with launching something for my daughter's daycare center, which is a nonprofit. They need money to replace playground equipment, to take field trips and add programming like music. That's not going to resonate with just anyone -- only to my circle of contacts. So it's unlikely that you'd make a fund-raising widget for it.

Is there a technical, marketing or strategic reason why we couldn't make our own badges?

Hi Kerri,
Thanks for the post about LinkedIn's nonprofit initiative. Steve Bridger of NFP 2.0 reached out to me, and I've just responded via comment with more details on our initiative over at his blog:
http://www.nfp2.co.uk/2007/03/20/leveraging-social-networking-to-influence-change/#comment-4699

To answer your question about letting people choose which causes they support, I'm excited to let you know that we've got more great organizations on the way, so there'll be more to choose from soon - stay tuned! I'm also happy to receive suggestions for other nonprofit organizations you'd like to see on LinkedIn.

All the best,

Dave Sanford
Product and Business Analyst
LinkedIn
http://www.linkedin.com/in/bigsanford

Kerri, thank you for your kind words. We certainly appreciate it. I hope you won't mind if we add you to our blog roll. We've recently beefed up the list. We've also added more links to our nonprofit job opportunities section. As the new editor of frogloop, I hope to continue Justin's legacy. But don't worry, Justin sits right next to me, so he's still very involved. -Hatef
